Why Do Parental Controls Keep Turning Off? A Family Troubleshooting Checklist

When a limit seems to disappear, it is tempting to assume a child bypassed it. Sometimes that happens, but many failures come from the wrong family account, an allowed exception, a device that is not syncing, or a control that never covered the app in question. Troubleshoot the setup before adding more restrictions.

Confirm the child is using the supervised account

Apple Screen Time and Google Family Link depend on the correct child account and family relationship. Check the account signed into the device, the family organizer or parent role, and whether supervision is still active. A second Apple ID, Google Account, browser profile, guest mode, or newly reset device can sit outside the rules you expected to apply.

If your home mixes Apple and Android devices, remember that one system does not become a universal control panel for the other. Our Screen Time and Family Link comparison explains the boundary.

Check who knows the parent passcode

Use a Screen Time passcode or parent credential that the child does not know and that is different from the device unlock code. Do not type it where it can easily be watched or share it in a message. If a passcode may be known, change it from the parent-controlled account and verify recovery options before relying on it.

Review exceptions that look like failures

  • “Always Allowed” or unlimited-time apps may continue working during downtime.
  • A child may receive extra time after a parent approves a request.
  • Phone calls and emergency features can remain available even when a device is locked.
  • A website may work in one browser or app even when a different category is restricted.
  • Downloads approved earlier may remain installed unless app use is limited separately.

Read the exact setting rather than assuming “blocked” means every feature stops everywhere.

Verify date, time, and schedules

Downtime and daily limits depend on the device’s time and the schedule configured for that child. Confirm the time zone, automatic date and time, school-night versus weekend schedules, and any changes made for travel. Then test a short temporary schedule while the parent and child devices are together.

Update and reconnect the devices

Install supported system updates, restart both the parent and child devices, and confirm they have an internet connection. Remote changes may not appear immediately on a device that has been offline. Avoid removing the child account or erasing the device as a first step; account removal can create a larger recovery problem.

Test one rule at a time

  • Choose one clearly supervised device.
  • Set a short test limit for one non-essential app.
  • Check the child device before and after the limit.
  • Try the same app through a browser, another profile, or another device.
  • Write down which path worked and which did not.

This separates a failed setting from a coverage gap. Router controls, device controls, account controls, and in-app controls each see different parts of family activity.

Keep purchases and app use as separate checks

Purchase approval controls whether a child can obtain an app; it does not necessarily control how long the approved app can be used. Review our guide to app purchase approval without sharing the parent password, then configure time or content limits separately where appropriate.

Use controls as part of a family plan

Parental controls reduce risk and create useful boundaries, but no setting replaces age-appropriate conversations, supervision, and periodic review. Explain which rules are active, why they exist, and how a child can ask for an exception. A system the family understands is easier to maintain than a collection of hidden restrictions.

If several accounts and devices have become tangled, we can help parents review the current setup, remove conflicting rules, test the controls, and learn how to manage changes. See our parental-control setup services.
