Apple Screen Time vs. Google Family Link in a Mixed-Device Home

Laguna Parental Controls — family device setup in Laguna Beach

Apple Screen Time and Google Family Link are both useful, but neither one is a universal control panel for every device in a family. The best choice usually follows the child’s primary device and account, not the parent’s preferred phone.

Where Apple Screen Time is strongest

Screen Time works most naturally when the child uses an Apple ID inside Apple Family Sharing. It can manage app limits, downtime, content and privacy restrictions, communication choices, and purchase approvals across supported Apple devices. The parent should verify that the child is signed into the intended Apple ID and that Screen Time changes are syncing.

Family Link is designed around a supervised Google account. It is especially useful for Android phones and tablets and for account-level approvals in Google’s ecosystem. Chromebook behavior may also depend on whether the device is personally owned, school managed, or signed into more than one profile.

What neither system automatically controls

Game consoles, television streaming profiles, many school devices, and the home router keep their own settings. A limit on an iPhone does not automatically create the same limit on a PlayStation. A Google account rule does not automatically choose the content rating inside every streaming service.

A practical division of responsibility

  • Use the child-device platform for app access, schedules, purchases, and account recovery.
  • Use each game or streaming service for its own profile, rating, chat, and purchase settings.
  • Use the router for broad Wi-Fi schedules, guest networks, and device-level pauses.
  • Avoid stacking multiple tools over the same feature until you test which one wins.

The goal is not the largest number of controls. It is a small number of layers that the parent understands and can test.

Our Family Setup is designed for this kind of cross-device coordination. You can also review the parental-control setup FAQ before choosing a service.
