A Practical Parental-Control Checklist for a New Child Device

Laguna Parental Controls — family device setup in Laguna Beach

Start with the parent account

Before installing another app, confirm which adult account will act as the family organizer. It should use an email address and recovery method the parent controls. Adding a child under the wrong organizer can make purchases, location sharing, and future account recovery much harder.

Build the child account correctly

Use the child’s correct age when the platform requires it. Avoid sharing one adult account across family devices. A properly configured child account gives the parent a clearer approval trail and makes it easier to change rules as the child gets older.

Decide the rules before opening settings

Write down the family’s answers to a few practical questions: Which apps require approval? What happens at bedtime? Are weekends different? Who may communicate during downtime? Are purchases disabled or approved individually? Technology settings work better when they reflect a rule the household already understands.

Configure the essential layers

  1. Require parent approval for new apps and purchases.
  2. Choose age-appropriate web, app, game, and media ratings.
  3. Create separate weekday and weekend schedules.
  4. Review communication and location-sharing choices.
  5. Turn on device-finding and parent-controlled account recovery.
  6. Configure the console, streaming profile, or router separately when the phone’s family system does not cover it.

Test the child’s actual device

Do not stop at the parent dashboard. On the child device, test one blocked app, one blocked website, one purchase request, one downtime transition, and one parent override. Testing finds account mix-ups and settings that look right but are not applying.

Leave yourself a map

Write down where the parent changes each important rule later. Revisit the setup after the first week, after major operating-system updates, and whenever the family adds a new device.

No checklist blocks every risk. It creates a known starting point the parent can explain, test, and adjust.
